Earth Day Celebration

Ventura's first annual 2007 Earth Day Celebration and "Curb Global Warming" event was held on Sunday, April 29th from 11am to 5pm at Mission Park in downtown Ventura.

In celebration of World Earth Day, this local event was jointly hosted by the Ventura Charter School of Arts and Global Education, VCCOOL (Ventura Climate Care Options Organized Locally) and the City of Ventura.

Admission to this community eco-event was free and included:

  • Opening Native American blessing by The Aztec Dancers
  • Addresses by County Supervisor Steve Bennett (2007 Climate Change Action Plan), City Council Member Brian Brennan and others
  • Solar-powered entertainment stage with performances by Raging Arb and The Redheads (surf rock), Simulakro (rock en espaņol), Seeds of Whatever (middle eastern fusion), The Debra Farris Band (blues and rock) and more
  • "Climate change" project displays including Ventura Cloth Bag Project, Low Carbon Diet, Step-It-Up petition and many other ways for people of all ages to get involved and pitch in to curb global warming
  • Compost and recycling presentations and a craft station for kids to make art from discarded and recycled materials
  • Silent Auction including environmental-friendly themed gift baskets (filled with items from pet care to gardening supplies) and Earth Day art projects made by children
  • New music CD for sale: "Earth Day, Every Day" is an eclectic mix of songs from local musicians and sounds from nature, including a chorus of bellowing frogs
  • Rock-climbing wall, jolly jump, story telling, Clothes-Line Capers, and face painting
  • "New Games" : non-competitive, community-building games for kids and adults
